On Paper Strategies
Draw It!
Fold a piece of computer paper in half hamburger style. On the top half write the word and definition. On the bottom half draw a picture of the word. Drawing a picture of the word can be difficult for some words, however, usually the more challenging the more creative their work ends up being. This will help them remember the word and what it means. Their silly picture should pop into their head when they hear the word!
Make Up a Story
Have your child create a story out of the vocabulary words. Their story will be funny but it will get them thinking on how they can relate the words together which will build their understanding of each word.
Scrambled Letters
Scramble each word for your child and provide a clue as to what the scrambled word is. The child then needs to figure out what each word is. If the are stuck on a word give them another clue. This will help your child to learn the spelling and definition of each word.
Memory Game
Write each vocabulary word on a card and each either definition and/or picture to represent the word on another card. Mix the cards up and lay them down in rows. Have the child pick two cards and if the word matches with the definition or picture then they get a pair. If it does not match then the flip the cards over and it is the next players turn. This game will challenge their knowledge of the definitions and improve their memory.
